Dubai Police has implemented stricter regulations on reckless driving, now impounding vehicles for up to 30 days for a range of traffic offences. Drivers should be aware of these additional penalties, which are aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing accidents in Dubai.

Key Offences Leading to 30-Day Impoundment

With this amendment, certain violations will now carry a 30-day impoundment period in addition to existing fines, which range from AED 400 to AED 1,000 and four black points. Key violations include:

Using mobile phones while driving: Defined as any form of distraction due to devices, this is now a major offence that poses serious risks on the road.

Tailgating: Not leaving a safe distance from the vehicle in front, which can lead to serious rear-end collisions.

Sudden deviation: Erratic lane changes that endanger other drivers and pedestrians.
Heavy vehicle drivers will also face the same 30-day impoundment penalty if they fail to maintain proper lane discipline.

Additional 14-Day Impoundment Offences

The new regulations also specify a 14-day impoundment period for certain other dangerous driving behaviors:

  • Entering a road without ensuring it is clear
  • Reversing in a manner that poses a risk to life or property
  • Lane indiscipline
  • Stopping in the middle of the road without a valid reason
  • Dangerous overtaking
  • Driving without the necessary safety and security conditions
  • Overtaking from the road shoulder or stopping on the shoulder in non-emergency situations
  • Driving without a license plate or with unauthorized changes to the vehicle color

These penalties underscore Dubai’s commitment to reducing risks on the road, with authorities highlighting the dangerous consequences of distracted driving and sudden, unexpected maneuvers.

High Costs of Reckless Driving in Dubai

This is not the first time Dubai has intensified penalties for traffic offences. Last year, Dubai Police introduced a substantial AED 50,000 release fee for serious traffic offences like reckless driving and running red lights. As traffic safety remains a top priority, the UAE government continuously strengthens regulations to combat dangerous driving practices.

The latest amendments to Dubai’s traffic law emphasize the importance of responsible driving and aim to curb reckless behavior on the roads. For drivers in Dubai, understanding and adhering to these rules is essential, both for personal safety and to avoid costly penalties.
